The lot features an exquisite authentic original bandolier bag attributed to the Great Lakes Woodlands Native American Indian tribe of the Chippewa and dating to circa 1870-1880. The piece shows a classic design of a large shoulder bag with flowing floral beaded pattern on gray ground. The bag features excellent glass trade seed beadwork showing such impressive 19th Century bead colors as semi-transparent, semi-transparent dark green, medium green, semi-transparent sky padre blue, semi-transparent white, dark blue, semi-transparent amber, greasy yellow, red white hearts, butterscotch yellow, and corn yellow along with others. The Bandolier or Bandoleer bag features an early trade clothe construction with a black background being framed in fancy white beaded design and having a early trade clothe outer piping. The large wide shoulder strap is fully beaded and shares the same incredible beaded design with a trade clothe backing and trade clothe piping. The piece even features the original whimsical beaded fringe showing cut glass tube beading with Germantown bright red and white yarn fringe. The piece has been examined by a Native American Artifact and Beadwork expert and was found to be an authentic Pre-1880 example. Provenance: From a Historical Native American & Western Artifact private collection in Billings, Montana. Other similar examples with less prominent craftsmanship and beadwork have sold at Allard Auction in 2010 for $5,400, at Jackson’s Auction in 2004 for $5,000, at Cowan’s Auction in 2013 for $7,200, and as high as $43,200 at Cowan’s Auction 2014. This is truly a wonderful authentic example of a fine 1870’s Chippewa Bandolier Bag. Measures overall 13”W x 47”L with the straps being 5”W each.
