The lot offered for public sale features an excellent Cheyenne Native American Indian attributed Pipe Tomahawk. The piece is attributed to the Cheyenne Indians of Wyoming dating to circa 1870-1880. The tomahawk features a very unique and unusual solid brass head with a large heavy fine construction having a flat edge blade, typical haft eye hole, and long pipe bowl showing three incised grooved lines. The weapon also shows a solid wood haft having hot file branding iron adornment having a telegraph copper wire wrapping extending over 75% of the surface. Each end of the haft including the smoking tip and the end cap feature a fine presentation quality poured pewter with the smoking tip having a very nice chevron like pattern. The pipe tomahawk head shows a well-preserved finish with nice metal quality and a heat treated like patina. One the right side of the blade in very faint lettering the blade is marked with old ink remnants remaining, “(the first portion is illegible as it is very faint) … Property… / Red Cloud”. The pewter end cap is marked with paint from a collection or museum identification number of “MI-2163 / AIM-164”. Sotheby’s Auction House sold an Important Wood and Metal Pipe Tomahawk attributed to being Owned by Red Cloud A Sioux Chief 1876 at their 5/16/2012 sale for $50,000 USD and being listed in “The Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art.” The tomahawk listed in this lot is also listed in “The Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art” 2009 publication by Mark Francis on page 97 figure 158. The tomahawk was from the Ted & Lilly Jarvis and Mark Francis Collections. The Ted & Lilly Jarvis Collection has included a few notable pieces such as the Nez Perce Spontoon War Tomahawk sold for $22,500 at Sotheby’s 5/22/2013 sale and also the Crow Double-Cutout Pipe Tomahawk sold for $11,500 at the Sante Fe Manitou Gallery 8/11/2013 sale. This exact tomahawk was previously listed and found to be authentic by Bonham’s Auction House in their June 19th 2017 sale along with a dozen other items from the same collection. This is truly an excellent and possibly historic tomahawk offered for sale. Bonham’s auction offered the tomahawk without the beaded drop. Our company is offering the piece with the beaded drop. The drop is a later addition to the piece most likely added in the 20th century. The drop shows an Indian tanned hide with glass trade seed beadwork in chalk white, sky padre blue, dark blue and red white hearts having a long fringe and trade brass beads. The tomahawk was purchased from the Jarvis collection with this drop included, which adds to the overall appearance and history of the piece. This is an excellent representation of an early tomahawk. Measures overall 22”L x 9”W x 1.25”D. Drop is 18”L.
