CHINA: Hsuan Tung, 1909-1911, white metal medal, year 2 (1910), 68mm, Chinese legend in seal script, nányáng dàchén banfa (Awarded by Nanyang Trade Minister) / xuantong èr nián wùchan huì jiangpái (Prize medal of Production Union [issued in] the 2nd year of Xuantong), two Imperial dragons circling central legend // standing figure of Xuan Yuan (personal name of Huangdi, the Yellow Emperor), standing on globe among clouds, radiant sun behind, rim bumps, VF, RRR, ex I.S. Coushnir Collection. I.S. Coushnir published a short catalog, Chinese Coins Without Currency, of mostly Chinese openwork charms documenting 36 charms and amulets. Published in The China Journal, Vol. XVII, No. 6, December 1932. This medal is listed in Li Hunqing's 'Qing Dynasty Medals' Catalogue, page 123. At least two different types of medals are known: one issued in the 1st year of Xuantong reign (1909) and another type issued in the 2nd year (1910). Medals were awarded by the last Viceroy of Liangjiang Zhang Renjun who was also put in charge of trade and commerce in the five treaty ports of Nanyang (a general name used towards the end of the Qing Dynasty for the coastal provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong) and held the appointment of "Nanyang Trade Minister." The Production Union was established in the area of Shanghai by Nanyang Main Bureau of Commerce and Industry.
