CHESTER W. NIMITZ
CHESTER W. NIMITZ
(1885 - 1966) American admiral, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II and largely responsible for the successful "island-hopping" campaign against the Japanese. Very rare, very early D.S. "C. W. Nimitz", 1p. 4to., "U.S.S. MAUMEE Navy Yard, New York", July 18, 1917, a special requisition ordering that a sailor be paid $51.00 if due to him. File holes at top, else very good. After the United States declared war on Germany in April 1917, Nimitz was on board the Maumee when it served as a refueling ship for the first squadron of U.S. Navy destroyers to cross the Atlantic. During this time, the Maumee conducted the first-ever underway refuelings.
