Watercolor and ink on paper, hanging scroll, featuring girl on water buffalo, signed and attr. Cheng Shifa (Chinese, 1921-2007), inscribed with 3 artist seals, 75 x 49 cm. Cheng Shifa was a Chinese painter best known for his works depicting figures, landscapes, and flowers. His eclectic style merged traditional Chinese wash techniques with Western drawing aesthetics. Born in 1921 in Songjiang, China, Cheng graduated from the Shanghai School of Art in 1941. In 1950, the East China People’s Art Publishing House in Shanghai employed him to produce book serial illustrations. His illustrations of the English version of the novel The Scholars won him a silver medal at the Leipzig International Book Fair in 1959. Though he had a successful career as an illustrator, Cheng is best remembered for his brush paintings of ethnic groups from Yunnan, a southwestern province that borders Vietnam, Laos, and Burma. The artist died on June 17, 2007 in Shanghai, China. Today, his works are held in the collections of the China Art Museum in Shanghai and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
