This is a miniature working pneumatic two stamp mill with original custom wood box and paperwork. It was manufactured by J.C. Butterfield of Chicago and is either a Patent model, or a working salesman model used by Butterfield himself. Butterfield applied for a patent on October 23, 1879, and received his patent August 3, 1880, Patent # 230,611. Butterfield's stamp mill differs from the standard stamp mill by "a major change in the revolving cams ... which raise the stamps to fall by gravity only..." Butterfield did not use the cams, but rather inserted a pneumatic lifter for the extraction of metals from metallic ores. The miniature stamp mill comes in it's very own original wooden box that measures 13" x 12" x 10," . Also included is a rare original information sheet illustrating the device on one side, with a brief discussion on the other side. Butterfield was one of he Chicago pioneers, listed on the Pioneer society rolls by 1840. Butterfield may have been an engineer. He invented and patented numerous pneumatic devices. He was an agent for the Erie RR in 1874. As an original working model of an 1879 stamp mill, this model had importance in the evolving of the stamp mill process over time. It is unique.
