This is a Burnside 4th Model Civil War breech loading rifle chambered in .54 caliber and manufactured in 1863-1864. The Burnside rifle was the third most popular rifle in the Civil war with over 50,000 used by Union troops. Only the Spencer and Sharps carbines saw more use during the war. This carbine features a round steel barrel with solid walnut hardwood stocks. The lock plate is marked "Burnside Rifle Co. Providence, R.I.". The barrel is marked "Cast Steel 1862". Lastly, the top of the frame is marked "Burnside Patent March 25, 1856". The top of the breech shows the serial number "39081". Production of the 4th Model is estimated at 7000. The Burnside carbine is in good overall condition with moderate wear. The carbine measures 39.25" with a 21" barrel. This is an antique firearm manufactured before 1898. NO FFL required.
