The reverse of this coin depicts Gallienus after a victory in battle, and reads VIRTVS AVG "virtue of the emperor" Gallienus, born in about 218 A.D., was the son of Valerian I. Valerian named him Caesar in 253 A.D. Gallienus' fifteen year reign is notable. During the instability of Crisis of the Third Century, civil wars resulted in the death of many emperors shortly after their ascent. In 268 A.D., Gallienus was murdered. While details are uncertain, many of Gallienus' officials wanted him dead. JC-30101-33
