Valentinian II was the son of Valentinian I. His reign, which commenced in 375 A.D. witnessed the beginning of the end of the western Roman empire. From 375 to 393 A.D. he was technically emperor, although the actual powers of the state typically resided in others. He died at war in the age of 21. The reverse of this coin reads GLORIA ROMANORVM ("glory of Rome"), and depicts a gruesome scene, the emperor dragging a helpless captive to his death. JC-30101-42
