Valentinian lived between 321 and 375 A.D. In 364 A.D. he became emperor and quickly installed his younger brother Valens as emperor of the east, retaining power for himself in the west. Being the last Roman empire to conduct campaigns across the Danube and Rhine rivers, Valentinian I is sometimes considered the last of the great western emperors. The decline of Rome in the years following Valentinian's death is echoed in the coinage of the day. The coins of Valentinian I often display unparalleled mastery in the obverse legends, featuring very small but readable type, which could almost pass as modern today. But the coins of successors became increasingly crude and rudimentary in short order, as the empire crumbled. JC-30101-41
