Born in 263, Licinius I rose to the rank of Augustus of the West, when so appointed by Gallerius. The edict issued by Gallerius, granting some rights to Christians, was reissued jointly by Licinius I and Constantine the great. But the two were competitors, and Constantine eventually had Licinius I executed in 325 A.D. Obverse: IMP C VAL LIC LICINIVS PF AVG ("Emporer, Ceasar, Valerius Licinius, pius and happy, Augustus"); Bust of Licinius, facing right. Reverse: IOVI CONSERVATORI ("Jupiter protects our emperors"); Jupiter standing left, chlamys across left shoulder, holding Victory on globe and leaning on sceptre, eagle at left with wreath in its beak, captive right, K over II Mu in right field.
