"The sphere is arguably the purest of forms. The purity of this sphere is disrupted, first by texture, then by color, and finally by physical separation. It is much like the sphere we call home, where we are divided by race, religion and political ideologies. If one looks more closely at this piece, however, it becomes clear that the divisions are superficial, and at the heart of it, unity persists.
This began as a block of cherry, glued up with sacrificial plywood spacers. It was then turned into a sphere, textured, split in half and then the central spacer was removed. A hemispherical cavity was then turned into each half in order to receive a smaller sphere. The remaining plywood spacers were removed, the components were painted and then glued to the smaller sphere. A metal stand was then fabricated from sheet steel to which the sphere was mounted."
About the Artist
"The creation of art is a journey. For some makers, this journey is a straight shot down the highway to their desired destination. For others, it is a slow paddle down a meandering river with lots of detours and exploration of hidden coves. I fall into the second group, as is apparent from a viewing of my portfolio.
I’ve worked with wood in one way or another for most of my life but it was in 2010 when I started experimenting with the lathe that my passion for creating took flight. Initially enthralled by the natural beauty of wood, I focused on bowls and hollow forms. Shortly thereafter I realized the degree to which individuality could be expressed and stories told by manipulating the surface with carving, coloring, and texturing. I am also fascinated by the opportunities afforded by adding non-wood materials.
As my work evolves, I am becoming increasingly enamored with sculptural and non-traditional shapes. I am having a blast exploring this meandering, creative river and can’t wait to see what’s around the next bend."

Previewing Details:
All EOG auction items will be available for on-site viewing beginning Thursday, June 23 at 5:30PM CDT at the Kansas City Convention Center. Remote bidding on-line opens May 26, 2017. The live auction starts at 7:30PM (Central) on Friday, June 10. Remote bidders will be able to bid during the auction via a live audio and/or video feeds. You must be pre-registered to bid online.
Downtown Kansas City, Missouri tax rate of 10.475% will be applied to all purchases paid for and picked up at the Symposium site.

After the purchase price has been paid in full and after the sale has been completed, property must be removed from the auction at the Buyer’s expense. The American Association of Woodturners will, as a service to Buyers, arrange to have the property packed, insured, and shipped via UPS at the request, expense and entire risk of the Buyer. Any claims will be between carrier and Buyer.

2. DISPUTES: The American Association of Woodturners shall designate the winning bidder after each item is auctioned. If a dispute arises between two or more bidders, the American Association of Woodturners reserves the right to reopen bidding. The American Association of Woodturner's designation of a buyer shall be final.
3. BIDDING & PRE-BIDDING: The American Association of Woodturners is providing internet and live bidding as a service to bidders. Bidders acknowledge and understand that this service may or may not function correctly the day of the auction. Under no circumstances shall a bidder have any claim against the American Association of Woodturners or anyone else if the internet service fails to operate correctly before or during the live auction.
4. The American Association of Woodturners has the right to accept or deny bidders from attending their auctions, both in person and online.
5. Online bidders agree and understand that they will not be invoiced and may not be able to pay until the entire, onsite auction is over. All purchases will be charged to your credit card immediately following the auction. Any other payment arrangement must be arranged and approved by the American Association of Woodturners a minimum of 48 hours prior to the auction.
6. The American Association of Woodturners makes no representations whatsoever that the Buyer of a work of art will acquire any reproductions rights thereto.
