He and two others successfully mined the creek. Later, they mined what is today’s Hangtown Creek where they struck it rich and the camp of Dry Diggings was established. In 1849 the name was changed to Hangtown after three men were hung. In 1854 the city changed its name once again, this time to Placerville.
