Helmut Holtz - Birds-eye View of Indianola. Taken from the Bay on the Royal Yard, on board the Barque Texana, Sept. 1860. Hamburg: Ed. Lang's Lithographical Establishment, 1860. 36.3 x 59.1 cm. Very minor pen hole in sky portion. Some moderate foxing in margin. Image very good. Handsomely framed. Helmut Holtz, the artist and publisher, appears to have executed only two American views according to the Reps. (Indianola and Matagorda Bay) See Reps,Views and Viewmakers 3981. Reps, Cities on Stone, p. 93. Reps locating only four copies. A disastrous hurricane in August of 1886 and the fear of future tropical storms forced the town to be abandoned. A very rare and desirable view. Courtesy of Denwood & Dana Butler, Mason. Consigned Lot

This 2006 March Texas State Historical Association Charity Auction is being held in Austin, TX on February 12 - March 4, 2006.
