(Mirisch Corporation, 1964) Pencil and watercolor on 15 x 20” 8-ply illustration board by Bill Thomas of Kim Novak’s signature costume for Billy Wilder’s deeply cynical comedy Kiss Me Stupid. This is one of Wilder’s most under-rated films, and one most famous now for breaking the production code and receiving a condemnation from the Catholic League of Decency. Kim Novak plays Polly, a good-hearted barmaid/town tart, and her key wardrobe in this film is a slight derivation of this design, turning the tight pants into a sexy, jeans-type skirt which prefigures the hippie look a few years to come. The very sexy tied-bandana top is retained, as is the broad belt. The entire piece is in an Excellent state of preservation.
