Herbert Sidney Palmer was born in 1881 in Toronto. Like many artists of his day, Herbert S. Palmer studied under renowned Canadian artists and art teachers John William Beatty and Frederick S. Challener at the Ontario College of Arts. Herbert S. Palmer had his first exhibition in 1905 with the Ontario Society of Artists, to which he was elected as a member in 1909. He was also a founding member of the Toronto Arts and Letters Club and was elected as a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts in 1915. From 1926 to 1941, the artist was the curator of the Canadian National Exhibition fine arts department, choosing works to display at this premier art exhibition. Over his long artistic career, Herbert S. Palmer became known as a superb landscape artist, known for his astute choice of colour. He often painted in a pastoral manner, depicting sheep and cows at pasture. Locales for his paintings include the Humber Valley area around Toronto, the Muskokas, Quebec and Haliburton. Herbert S. Palmer sold through the T. Eaton Fine Art Galleries in Toronto and exhibited at major shows and exhibitions over the years. This included having paintings in exhibits at the New York World’s Fair and the Tate Gallery in London, England. His works are held in numerous public and corporate collections, as well as in the Art Gallery of Toronto, University of Hart House, and the National Gallery of Canada. Herbert S. Palmer died in 1970. PROVENANCE: Private collection (Ontario, Canada)
