Antique Winchester Model 1894 Take-Down Lever Action Rifle with Winchester Letter
This is an example of a Winchester Model 1894 Take-Down Sporting Rifle with Winchester Gun Museum letter. The aforementioned letter describes this rifle as: "a rifle, caliber 30, octagon barrel, plain trigger, takedown" and states that it was shipped from the warehouse on August 20, 1898, and returned for rework on October 24, 1898. The rifle has a blue barrel, magazine and receiver with casehardened hammer, loading lever and crescent steel buttplate. The stock and forearm are walnut. The barrel is fitted with a Lyman "Hunting Front" sight with ivory insert and a Lyman two-leaf folding rear sight with flat top and bright triangle. A folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The rifle is fitted with double set triggers. The triggers and sights are not mentioned in the factory letter and may have been installed when the rifle was returned for "rework". The top of the barrel is stamped with the two-line legend: " -MANFACTURED BY THE- / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN.CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight and the caliber designation "30 W.C.F." in front of the receiver. The serial number, "46726", is stamped on the forward edge of the receiver.
BBL: 26 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 30 WCF
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 46726

Fine. The rifle retains 75% of the faded original blue and casehardened finish. Most of the blue finish is present on the barrel and the sides of the receiver. The magazine tube, forearm cap, receiver extension and top and bottom edges of the receiver show handling wear and have aged to gray-brown patina. The case colors on the hammer, loading lever and buttplate have aged to a silver-gray patina. The refinished stock and forearm are fine with only very minor handling wear. The barrel markings are sharp. This is a solid example of antique Winchester Model 1894 Take-Down Lever Action Rifle.
