Manufactured in 1897. This rifle has had the magazine tube and barrel shortened to 17 inches, (5 1/4 inches round, the remainder octagon). The forward top flat is marked "BROWNING BROS, OGDEN, U." followed by "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN U.S.A." and the upper left rear flat is marked with the two line nickel steel/smokeless powder marking. The top flat at the breech is marked "30 W.C.F.", standard early style upper tang marking and the serial number is on the bottom of the receiver. Blade front and adjustable Marbles semi-buckhorn rear sights and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock.

Condition: Good as modified with a smooth grayish brown patina on the shortened barrel and magazine tube. The receiver is a smooth silver gray and shows signs of cleaning with an abrasive material. The buttplate has a smooth mottled gray patina, and the hammer and lever have a smooth dark patina. The wood is good overall. The stock has been sanded, (heavily in the wrist and rear edge areas) and refinished showing only light handling marks and the forearm has several minor cracks running from the forend cap back and scattered minor dings and gouges. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
