Andrew Jackson - Anti-Jackson Broadside
This broadside reprints earlier editorials by journalists unfavorable to Jackson with the implication, as shown in one woodcut, that "Jackson is to be President and you will be hanged." In the other illustration, Jackson prepares to cut off the ear of publisher Mordecai Manuel Noah (1785-1851) who appears as the hanging victim. Noah was the most prominent Jewish leader in the antebellum period. He was a playwright, newspaper editor, city sheriff, Grand Sachem of Tammany Hall, and the promoter of a failed Jewish "homeland" on Grand Island in the Niagara River near Buffalo. He supported Crawford in 1824, switched to Jackson in 1828, but later criticized Jackson's position on the U. S. Bank. It is titled: "A Mirror for Politicians. Moral Beauty of Consistency. A Warning to Unprincipled Politicians. 'Jackson is to be President, and you will be HANGED. M.M. Noah, 1824. M.M. Noah, when William Crawford was a candidate for President, was hired for 1000 Dollars to write against General Jackson. How much he has received for writing in his favour, we have not learned. If Jackson succeeds, is there not an equal chance that he will string up Noah? Some say he will let him off after chopping his ears. What hang the Sheriff of New York? He will hang Noah as grand Judge of Israel, not as Sheriff!" [Image: 21 1/4" H x 15 3/4" W on larger sheet] contained under glass in a gilt wood frame [25 3/4" H x 20" W].
