Erikarcha, Ancient Betwa Valley, Dasharna region– Monarchical Coinage, Amatya Ashadhamitra, Copper, 3.61g, Obv: Brahmi legend “Amatya Ashadhamitra…” above two stylized inverted Nandipada symbols, Rev: arched hill and a tree-in-railing symbols. Very fine, very rare.
The area around Erichh on the river Betwa was ruled by rulers with non-regal titles for a while, following the collapse of the Sunga kingdom. From inscriptions and coins, rulers with titles Amatya and Mahasenapati are known, which eventually give way to rulers with the full ‘Raja’ title. Even if the rulers held lesser titles, it does not mean that they were not independent rulers in their own right. Ashadhamitra is also known from a brick inscription found at Musanagar near Erichh. This is the only known instance of an individual holding a ministerial title having struck his own coins.
