Blade is 30 1/2 inches long, with etched decoration on both sides and the Ames scroll logo on the left ricasso. The hilt is gilt finished, with cut-through floral designs, and a rayskin grip. Blue steel scabbard, with raised floral designs on the gilt finished suspension bands. Has the N.P. Ames name and address stamped on the upper suspension band. An inscription on the top band reads "L. Sullivant/to/Col. James A. Wilcox/113th O.V.I." Research identifies L. Sullivant as Major Lyne Starling Sullivant, a commander in the 113th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which was organized by Colonel Wilcox in 1863. Enlisting for a 3-year term, the 113th spent most of the Civil War as part of the Department of the Cumberland, participating the Tullahoma, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Knoxville and Atlanta Campaigns, Sherman's March to the Sea, and finally participating in the Grand Review of the Armies before being mustered out on 6 July 1865. The 113th Ohio Volunteer Infantry saw extensive combat and had 9 officers and no enlisted men killed in action while 1 officer and 149 enlisted men died of disease.

Condition: Fine. The blade has a dark patina with well defined etching, and 30% of the original gilt finish on the hilt. The grip is missing the wire wrap and the shark skin grip has an open seam and several breaks. The scabbard has a dark patina. The suspension bands have about 40% of the original gilt finish.
