This is an exceptionally rare original Algonquian Native American Indians birch bark primitive canoe dating to circa 1880-1890’s. The hand crafted canoe measures a total of 13 feet 6 inches in length and is truly a very uncommon and scarce piece, especially in its fine condition. This authentic 19th Century example is increasingly scarce with very few examples being known to still exist in such wonderful condition. Most examples are in museum collections across Canada, where the Algonquin were mostly found. Provenance: From a large Early American and American Indian collection in Minnesota. The piece is from the Algonquin people of Northern Maine, where it was originally collected by the current owner. The piece shows a beautiful birch bark shell, showing live edge details. The interior of the canoe is made with a layer of vertical birch slat, and a layer of horizontal birch slats on top. The rim of the canoe is secured with galvanized nails, while the cross bars are fastened with rawhide lashing. The canoe shows good condition overall, showing some slight separation in the hull, but displaying impeccably. The canoe measures 13' 6" long, 31 7/8" wide, and approximately 21" deep. To find an original Indian made example is very rare, but even the modern reproductions are hard to come by and sell for a premium. Attached to the lot are two copies of an Algonquin Indian paddling in his Birch Bark Canoe in circa 1899 as it was shown in Scribner’s Magazine September 1899 entitled, “Where the Water Runs Both Ways”. These images are not included, but merely an example.
