ATTICA: AR tetradrachm (16.96g), 2nd-1st Centuries BC, Athens, New Style [ca. 137/6 BC (?)], bust of Athena Parthenos right // owl standing right with head facing, on horizontal amphora, with T on amphora and AP below, all within laurel weath, stunning strike and luster, NGC graded Choice AU Strike: 5/5, Surface: 3/5. The Roman general Sulla leveled most Athenian buildings in the years 88-85 BC, but did preserve many civic buildings. The Romans gave Athens the status of Free City because of its deeply admired schools.
