ARAB BYZANTINE: 'Abd Al-Malik (685-705), AE Fals (1.71g), Qinnasrin, AH 74-78. Caliph standing facin
ARAB BYZANTINE: 'Abd Al-Malik (685-705), AE Fals (1.71g), Qinnasrin, AH 74-78. Caliph standing facing front, left hand on sheathed sword, citing caliph 'Abd Al-Malik in margin, reverse transformed cross on steps, mint name to its left, "waf" (adequate, meaning good for full payment) to its right. A-3530. Attractive, especially reverse, choice very fine. Scarce.

A historical town in northern Syria, part of the Aleppo Governorate, Qinnasrin was previously an important Christian bishopric city. There appears to be two main varities of Qinnasrin falus from the Standing Caliph series, one where the mint appears to the right of the transformed cross, and another where it appears to the left. This example (left) seems to be slightly scarcer than the other.
