Silver Bow Basin. This is photo No. 86 taken by Winter & Pond Studios in Juneau, as part of their Alaska Views series. It is titled, “Hydraulic Mining In Silver Bow Basin, near Juneau, Alaska.” And mounted on a studio matte bearing their name. the picture shows a powerful hydraulic spray of water arcing across a stream into a hillside. In the background is a trestle bridge, and an “oil rig” sort of structure is seen closer to the hydraulic operation. A man is standing near the rushing stream and he is very small in relation to the arc of water. 4 ¼ x 7.” Good, clear contrast. From the Alaska State Library archives we quote the following:

"Lloyd Valentine Winter (1866-1945) and Edwin Percy Pond (1872-1943), of the photography company, Winter & Pond, were prominent Alaskan photographers. In 1893, Winter came to Juneau from San Francisco and entered a partnership with George M. Landerkin, known as Landerkin and Winter. In 1894, Landerkin was bought out by Winter's long time friend, E.P. Pond. Winter & Pond operated their Juneau-based curio and photography studio for over 50 years, providing a unique reflection of the state in the early 20th century. This partnership continued until Pond's death at age 71 in 1943. In 1945, two years after the death of E.P. Pond, Lloyd Winter turned the business over to Francis Harrison, who maintained the Winter & Pond Co. until it closed in 1956." [www.library.state.ak.us/hist/hist_docs/finding_aids/PCA117.doc].
