A rare example of a transitional hilt-form, the recurved guard with flared, fluted and rolled terminals with integral thumbring to the reverse, connected to the massivel pommel by a triangular guard set with a pierced plate; engraved overall. The tapering grip covered in twisted iron wire, with a turkshead knot at either end. The straight, double-edged Spanish blade of lenticular section with broad central fuller engraved, NO AL AMOR QUE NO CAUSE TROMENTO / SI NO ES FIRME CONESTA ME LOPAGARAS (No to love that causes no torment / If it is not firm, with this wilt thou pay me.) Beginning of the 17th century.Gripwrap refreshed, blade possibly refitted, sharpening marks visible at distal end. The guard shows distinct formal and decorative and characteristics in common with a group of Pappenheimer rapier hilts, notably the quillon terminals and the pierced and punched pattern in the guard plate. Overall length 94 cm. Condition II
