A superior example, the pommel, guard and suspension bands heavily inlaid en suite with flowering vine motifs in gold, grips of walrus. The massive, single-edged blade of shallow curvature, with two cartouches to the right forte; the first inscribed with the name and titles of Shah Abbas of Iran, ABBAS SHAH BANDE-YE VILAYET (r. 1588-1629) and the second with WORK OF ASSAD ALLAH, both in a very fine hand. Forged of superior Kara Taban (brilliant black) Persian wootz damascus steel in a fine and dramatic pattern. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with chiseled wootz chape. First quarter of the 17th century. Wear to leather. Overall length 95.5 cm. Condition II
