A 17th century Italian provincial carved wood and parcel gilt panel, probably formerly the centre of a triptych, the pediment surmount of the Virgin and Child looking down upon a triple window frame that contains the central half figure of Christ holding the world within the tracery flanked by two half figures of saints. The principal central group depicts the Madonna with female saints and to each side stand the full length figures of St Peter and St Paul, the stepped breakfront plinth base is carved to the first lower tier with a central shield within a quatrefoil roundel supported by a pair of standing birds and to each side by two male heads within similar roundels, an iron candle bracket is affixed to the lower plinth and the remains of an iron hinge to the lower right and left sides, 67.5 high x 47cm wide
Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Sidney J A Churchill MVO 1862-1920 and thence by descent. Sidney Churchill was a career diplomat whose service included the appointments of Consul General in Palermo (1896) and Naples in 1900.
Following his death in 1920 that well known author and compiler of art books Cyril G E Bunt produced in 1920 'The Goldsmiths of Italy: Some Account of their Guilds, Statues and Work' compiled from the published papers, notes and other material collected by the lade Sidney J A Churchill MVO. The forward was written by Sidney's widow Dr Stella Churchill and it was privately printed by Martin Hopkinson Ltd to 325 copies. A photograph exists from the early part of the 20th century showing the panel amongst Sidney Churchill's collection of Mediterranean furniture, textiles and objects
