Included here are two hand-painted, porcelain plaques, one of which is signed " F. Rhead ". Frames measure 17" by 19.5" and weigh 4.8 lbs. each. Exposed portion of the plaques measure 8.9" by 11.2" (These plaques were framed sometime in the past five years or more prior to our client's recent purchase, and each carries a heavy paper backing that we have not disturbed. As such, we don't know the precise size of the plaques nor if there are any markings on the rear.

One depicts a rooster and is signed "F. Rhead", while the other depicts two ducks. We believe this signed plaque was done by either
Frederick Alfred Rhead (1856-1933) or his son Frederick Hurten Rhead (1880-1942). Frederick Alfred was one of three sons of George Woolliscroft Rhead I (1832-?), all of whom followed in their father's footsteps as ceramicists. Frederick Alfred was a potter, designer, teacher and writer who worked for W. Brownfield , Minton , Wedgwood , Shelley , Cauldon Potteries and the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company. Frederick Hurten emigrated to the U.S. in 1902 to work for Weller Pottery in Zanesville Ohio, and later for the Roseville Pottery company.



We believe the second plaque is also likely by Rhead, based on its style, brushwork and size, and the fact it was framed identically as the other plaque. These plaques are being sold on behalf of a collector who purchased them together at estate sale some ...
