Mid 19th century Victorian, extra large size ( 6"L X 4" W X 5 1/2" H ) Staffordshire porcelain trinket "fairing" box in the form to resemble a musician's gentlemen's bureau. Hand-painted, footed & decorated with eagleson both front & back. The top is decorated with musical instruments ( lute & horn ) music books & a bureau mirror that sticks up to function as a lid handle. Called "fairing boxes" because they were made to be sold orgiven away at fairs & carnivals during the mid 19th century. Usually made in Germany & mass produced for several companies. This one is Staffordshire.
