This is a 1951 Schwinn Deluxe Spitfire, Model J-29 24" bicycle. According to Wikipedia, Schwinn Bicycle Company was founded in 1895 by German-born mechanical engineer Ignaz Schwinn in Chicago. By the 1950's, Schwinn had become the dominant bicycle make in the U.S. In 1951, Schwinn made the Spitfire in three sizes--26", 24", and 20"--and two trim levels--regular/ unequipped model, "If price is important", and "Deluxe". Quoting the 1951 Schwinn Catalogue: "The new Schwinn Deluxe Spitfire features quality equipment. A handsome, 24-inch model that's sure to be the choice of parents who want a sturdy, fully equipped bicycle for their boy and girl. Expertly designed for easy pedaling- better balance. Equipment includes built -in tank with electric horn, sturdy kickstand and chainguard, powerful headlight, and comfortable saddle. Beautiful baked -on enamel finish..." This bicycle is finished in light red and was further equipped with a Cadet speedometer/ odometer, which records speeds up to 55mph and shows 3,179 miles, and a securely mounted front metal basket. The bicycle is in good condition for its age, the tires hold air and the and the bike provides a smooth ride. The electric horn no longer works (battery?) an the light is missing the top cover. The bike frame is 16" and rides on 24" wheels/ tires. Overall length is 62". Interestingly, this bicycle has a City of Bozeman Bicycle registration sticker on the front fender--No. 214, Expired on December 31, 1960.
