18AL-67 C.W. OFFICER'S SWORDInscribed Civil War Officer’s sword and scabbard, marked on right side of brass scabbard throat “Presented to/Capt. Samuel T. Birdsall/Co. G. 27th Regt. C.V./by his command/Oct. 17th 1862”; in overall goodcondition with unmarked etched blade, wire wrapped rayskin grip, brass guard, pommel and scabbard mounts, some crazing and wear to leather scabbard. Accompanied by a large binder of information on Capt. Birdsall, hisConnecticut regiment and battles they participated in. Most notably, the Captain was involved in the battle of Fredericksburg, the battle of Chancellorsville (where he was captured and then paroled) and participatedin the battle of Gettysburg, fighting in the famous “Wheatfield”. After the unit was mustered out on July 27, 1863, Birdsall returned to the practice of law in New York, subsequently moved to San Francisco, CA. (ca. 1870), married in 1882 and passed away in Napa, CA in 1890 at the age of 50 years.
