1898 $5 PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. Both sides of this amazing piece have rich orange-gold color. This piece is fully struck with every individual design detail boldly rendered. The deeply mirrored fields and highly lustrous devices combine to present incredible "black and gold" contrast. A tiny break in the frost is evident on Liberty's chin, and a miniscule v-shaped lint mark just inside star 3 are the only readily apparent pedigree markers on the obverse of this piece. The reverse has an extremely small black dot on the upper edge of the left facing wing, vertically below the G in GOD. This will also serve the pedigree researcher.
Unlike other denominations, the proof half eagles are generally found in lower grades. This piece is the finest 1898 proof half eagle certified by PCGS, and the only example to receive this grade (11/06). NGC claims a PR67 Ultra Cameo and a single PR68 Ultra Cameo example, the only two coins to be given a better grade assessment.
The half eagles boasted a much smaller mintage than the similarly dated proof quarter eagle. Just 75 of these pieces were coined as proofs, and about 25 or 30 still exist today. The mintage difference obviously represents an increased demand for quarter eagles with their smaller face value. In his Proof Encyclopedia, Walter Breen pointed to the lower mintage and the small number of auction appearances, and called this date "a sleeping golden elephant."

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
