Obv: CALIFORNIA at the bottom, PROGRESS OF TIME AND FREEDOM TO ALL MANKIND JULY 4th 1876 around a circular inner band adorned with 38 stars, small Arms of California in beaded circle above a mining-sailing-railroad scene. Rev: similar layout as obverse, WASHINGTON THE GREAT FOUNDER OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA JULY 4th 1776 around inner circle, head of Washington right in open-topped wreath, 1776 and Pine Tree flag to left, 1876 and Old Glory to right, sailing and stage coach scene below. Lustrous deep blue-grey throughout its mirrorlike fields with a bath of lively rose and peach iridescence that engages the eyes in a bright light source. Designed by Mohrig – perhaps Christoph Ferdinand Mohrig of Small Denomination California gold fame (or infamy), and dies by Albert Kuner who also did work for more than one private gold mint during the Days of ‘49. Choice for the grade.
