1857-S $20 Spiked Shield MS65 PCGS. Variety 20A. SSCA 0632. A pair of thin die lines near the left shield border identify the Spiked Shield variety. A lustrous and beautiful Gem with only incidental contact. This pleasing piece reveals no indication that spent more than a century at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. A trio of shipwrecks (S.S. Central America, S.S. Brother Jonathan, S.S. Republic) provided most surviving high grade Type One double eagles. The strike is needle-sharp aside from the top half of the mintmark. Included with this lot is a Certificate of Authenticity signed by expedition leader Tommy Thompson, a faux hardback book that holds the actual coin, and a Blanchard olive-green cardboard box.Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
