A rare Elgin Cutlass Pistol, Circa: 1837, mfg. by CB Allen, Springfield, Mass. This unusual cap & ball pistol is one of many variations and manufactures of knife pistols during and after 1837. The original blade was undoubtedly made by N.P. Ames for this and other variations of this same style weapon. The wooden grip has possibly been refinished or replaced at some time during it's time of service. Originally the U.S. Navy (Marines), contracted to purchase Elgin Cutlass Pistols during the 1837-1845 era to fight piracy on the high seas.
