1802 Boston Silk Needlework Memorial Reads: Sacred to the memory of Mrs S Adams
Federal Period
1802 Dated American Silk Needlework Funeral Memorial Embroidery - “Sacred to the memory of Mrs S Adams”
June 25th, 1802-Dated Federal Period, American Hand-Stitched Needlework Silk Thread and Background Funeral Urn Memorial Embroidery, "Sacred to the memory of Mrs S Adams who died AEt. 81. - June 25th 1802," Anonymous maker, Framed at Boston, Very Fine.
American, likey from Boston, Massachusetts and measuring 11.25” x 8.5” (by sight), this Memorial displays a classic design of a large arched Willow Tree appearing to be sadly draped over a swag-decorated metal Funeral Urn on large plinth (a heavy stone base supporting a statue or vase), upon which the central text reads: "Sacred to the memory of Mrs S Adams who died AEt 81. - June 25th 1802," hand-stitched in deep rich brown silk thread that is bold and easily readable. This sampler style Memorial is housed in a circa 1860-80s vintage worn gold gilt-painted simple wood frame under glass that is black stencil stamped on its original wooden backing board reading: “From D. R. Batchelder - Manufacturer of Picture Frames - Washington St. Boston" (not examined out of frame). Some thins and short splits in the silk background fields, and all the embroidery appears strong and solid. The silk needlework is in rich brown and tan colors with silvery and grain gold, plus light blue willow leaves and grass with black drapery and flourishes upon the central Funeral Urn. A pleasing example for display. Similar to others seen from the Boston area during this early 1800s period. The most intriguing part being the memorial itself reading: "Sacred to the memory of Mrs S Adams who died AEt 81. - June 25th 1802".
