1799 $10 Large Stars Obverse MS64 PCGS. Breen-6841, BD-10, Taraszka-22, R.3. Only one 1799 die (Breen's obverse 5) has Large Obverse Stars. This obverse was paired with two different reverses, BD-9 and BD-10. These are promptly distinguished by the location of a leaf tip, which points between IC for the very rare BD-9, and points to the I on the collectible BD-10. The Guide Book distinguishes between the Large and Small Obverse Stars varieties, but prices them equally in all grades, since the Small Obverse Stars BD-7 is comparable in rarity with BD-10. Breen, in his 1988 Encyclopedia, breaks the Small Obverse Stars into further subtypes: the Wide Date (BD-1 to BD-3), the Close Date (BD-4 to BD-6), and the Irregular Date (BD-7 and BD-8). It is possible that the Guide Book will someday recognize these different Small Date subtypes, and those collecting by Guide Book variety would then diminish the supply of 1799 eagles available for date collectors.
This is a splendid example of the Large Obverse Stars subtype. The strike is enticingly close to full. The eagle's left (facing) leg shows slight softness, but the eagle's breast and neck feathers are intricate, and Liberty's hair also has complete definition. Some of the obverse denticles, near 3 and 9 o'clock, are lower in relief and display roller marks. However, the fields and the major devices show no evidence of either adjustment marks or roller marks. Further, no abrasions are visible to the unaided eye. Once studied at length beneath a glass, a few wispy field marks become apparent, but although these determine the grade, they do not limit the eye appeal. The khaki-gold toning is even, and billowy luster dominates the legends and devices.
From The Essex Palm Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
