1793 Federal Period, First Edition Book “The Federal or New Ready Reckoner” by Samuel Sower, First Edition, About Extremely Fine.
This stated First Edition of Samuel Sower’s 1793 book “The Federal or New Ready Reckoner and Traders Useful Assistant,” measuring 7” x 3.75,” was published at Chestnuthill, Pennsylvania, and has original polished boards, professionally rebacked spine, with gold stamped leather title label. The contents, approximately 150 pages and 5 fold-out charts, are in excellent condition with only light foxing here and there. Most of the book consists of interest tables and conversion tables, including exchange rates for various foreign coins in different parts of the United States as it then existed. Because the United States Mint could not produced coins fast enough to meet current needs, Congress authorized a number of foreign coins to be used as legal tender in the United States at specified rates. These foreign coins continued to be legal tender in the United States until 1857. Among these coins quoted in this book are the English Guinea, the Portuguese Moidore, Johannes, and Millreis, the Rupee of Bengal, the Rixdollar of Sweden, the Pagoda of India, the French Livre Turnois, the Spanish Pistole, and the Russian Ruble. This is a very rare book today, as most were discarded when a new work was published.
