James F. Allen (1840-1910) of Kingston, Ontario, Canada was a popular and well respected ship captain. In 1863 he served in Washington during which time it was attacked by Gen. Early. From there he was sent to Bridgeport, Al. t build riverboats to carry provisions to Chattanooga, Tn. He was also on one of the boats when it ran the blockade off Lookout Mountain. After the war he returned to the Great Lakes to capt. both sailing and steam vessels. The watch is engraved with " Presented to Capt J.F. Allen by a few friends as a token of esteem KINGSTON Dec 13th / 83". The watch is a A.W. Co. Waltham, Mass. with porcelain 1.75 inch dial. Roman numerals and second hand. Adjusted movement.
