The Maltese Falcon inscribed and signed by Dashiell Hammett
The Maltese Falcon inscribed and signed by Dashiell Hammett. Hammett, Dashiell. The Maltese Falcon. New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. Second printing. Octavo, 267 pages. Inscribed by Hammett in black ink on the front flyleaf, “To Ted Hecker for his, press-agentry the night of the umbrella-parade, Dashiell Hammett, New York, April 23, 1930”. Hammett’s pen dried up mid-inscription, thus the two different inks. Spine slightly cocked, small white paint spots at spine title, light soiling of boards. Hinges remain sound. According to Hammett’s biographer, Richard Layman, New York City experienced heavy rainfalls on Easter Day, April 20, and although no details are known about Ted Hecker, it seems Hammett appreciated his assistance during his visit. Signed copies of The Maltese Falcon are rare, with only a handful known to have sold in the last 30 years.
